Bill,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for you help this year. I had fun doing what I do with the VBPS. This coming year I move into the Admin Officers slot and do the PRO job as well. The attached is my cut at the NPR102S for VBPS 2010 Cooperative Advertising Squadron Planning.

Do I still send this data your way? Do I also send you the NPR 102 Request for Reimbursement on 4-1-2010 (period covered 12-1-2009 to Feb 28, 2010) , 7-1-2010 ( period covered March 1 to May 31) , 10-1-2010 ( period covered June 1- to Aug 31) and 1-1-2011 ( period covered Sept 1 to November 30).

My paperwork says I should be sending data to Staff Commander for Cooperative Advertising (SCCA). Is that you for 2010. Then you or the SCCA sends it along to HQ by the 15th of the month.

Do you need hardcopy via US Mail or do emails work for you. What address do I send this to if we need to go by US Postal Service?

Bob -
There's an entirely new set of Guidelines for the Co-Op Advertising program. It's now based on a squadron's educational sales and is handled entirely through headquarters. The PR/Marketing site on www.usps.org has all the details.
Merry Christmas, Bill

BoatFlorida.com Inquiry

Robert,

Thanks for your email. We have worked closely with several other Power
Squadrons and Auxiliaries in the state on our other sites throughout
Florida. Almost of our content is member/user generated.

We make many exceptions to non-profit organizations such as the Power
Squadron;
therefore, you can really take advantage of the exposure. In exchange, we
ask you to tell your members about the BoatFlorida.com network and put a
link on your site back to ours. Some suggestions and ideas we have are-

a.. Have a few members of the organization delegated as contributors that
sign up and create a profile on the BoatTreasureCoast.com site.

b. Post your events in the calendar of events, especially those that the
general boating public would be interested in such as classes, inspections,
and training.

c.. Setup a group for the Power Squadron on the website. You can see some
good
examples of groups like yours on our Brevard site at
http://www.boatbrevard.com/group/bananariversailpowersquadronmembergroup and
at
http://www.boatbrevard.com/group/citizensforfloridaswaterwayscffwmembersgroup .

I encourage you to sign up to the Brevard site and then join these groups so
you can see all the details. Groups can also be set to private so that you
control who signs up for them and only approved people can have access to
it.

d.. Participate with discussions and blogs posting safety related and
Power Squadron related material.

Thanks,
John

A Great Public Relations Tool - Picasa

I have been experimenting with the noted software. It does many things that I like so I have been uploading pictures to it and they get cataloged. Then I take the pictures and make a movie. I dump the movie to YouTube and then I add sound. Its a little challenging but its working. I think the more you use it the better you get so the movies will improve over time.Did I mention its FREE!

For more about it go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasa

A small glitch

Bob,
The ad is the incorrect size. It needs to be 3.25 wide by 6” high. It is also the incorrect format. It should be a pdf file.

In the future, you can submit this form (and attach the pdf file) online at WeSponsorTheTreasureCoast.com

I can schedule the ad when you send the correct size/format ad.

Thanks

On Board The Nina

At the Vero Beach Power Squadron General Meeting we discussed among many topics the Tuesday plan to have lunch at Wahoo's restaurant and then meet and greet the Nina and Santa Clara at Harborage Yacht Club and Marina in Stuart.

On Tuesday, Pete picked me up and we headed to Stuart at about 11 arriving at the marina at about 12, just in time for lunch. My plan was to take a few pictures and write a short story about the day. Afew photos are posted here. More photos are posted on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/vbps/

Wahoo's restaurant is in the middle of a new development, which includes a new condominium complex complete with a fabulous 3-story clubhouse overlooking the water. It is bordered by the railroad tracks, the water and the intracostal bridge which links US1 over the waterway. After we finished with the boats we took a short tour of the Harborage development, which included the clubhouse and a few 2 and 3 bedroom condominiums for sale. That's part of another story "Harborage in Stuart".

There were lots of people at Wahoo's having lunch waiting for the arrival of the 2 vintage replicas. While eating lunch the vessels arrived and docked and the restaurant crowd started to head out onto the pier. Our timing was just about perfect, as we had just finished eating when they docked so we paid our tab and ventured forth to take in the treat.

The Niña is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492. Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles. That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Niña has a different mission. They are a floating museum, and visit ports all over the Western Hemisphere.

The Santa Clara (Pinta), was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 40 ft air-conditioned main cabin down below with seating. Visitors can watch a video on the building of the ship in Brazil. The Santa Clara is available for private parties while in port. The Columbus Foundation, British Virgin Islands owns the vessels and more information about the group is available at http://www.thenina.com/

This was a Special event scheduled for the members of the USPS District 8, which consists of many Squadrons up and down the coast of Florida, and the press. The Vero Beach Power Squadron, which is part of the Vero Beach community, was present.

There was a ceremony welcoming the crews and captains to the port. During the proceedings the wind picked up and rumors of a tornado watch spread throughout. The crew of the Santa Clara took out about 6 extra lines to secure the boat to the dock as a precaution.

The members of District 8 presented numerous squadron burgees to the captains and spoke of many things that were lost to the wind, as the clouds started to roll in. Our Commander Bill Heimbaugh, presented our Burgee. I took pictures.

The spectators left and headed back along the dock towards the restaurant speaking about the ships, the weather and the days of old when men were men and women sailed wooden ships like the Nina and Pinta, with little knowledge about what they would encounter during the journey. It makes you wonder how it was possible to do what they did back in the days of old.

The pictures presented are for your enjoyment. I would recommend going to look at the vessels. They will be here for the next week.

If you like boating, water activity, want to get Boat Smart and live in Vero Beach, please consider joining us. We do have Safe Boating Classes throughout the year, we are very active in the community and we always want new members. Our website is www.verobeachps.com and we are located at 301 Acacia Road just over the Barber Bridge. We have a Friday Night Social from 5:30 to 7:30 and encourage you to attend. Tell them you saw a story Bob wrote and he invited you.

On a Friday Night

It was the Friday Night Social (FNS) at the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). These socials are held at the VBPS Building at 301 Acacia Road, right next to the William Barber Bridge.

There were lots of hors d'oeuvres provided by the Campbell's. As usual I was making the rounds and talking to people. During the evening a few announcements were made by Administrative Officer, Mrs. Janet Leh, thanking our hosts for the fine job on the food, along with a few reminders about upcoming events. Some people were circulating with sign up sheets for a few of the events.

After the FNS there was a Southern Cruise Captains meeting.

I think there were about 75 who showed all together. The rooms were packed and some guests even spilled out onto the back patio. It was a nice evening and the view of the bridge, the night-lights, the water splashing against the boats, and the cool breeze, helped add to the overall atmosphere.

If you missed that one there will be more so don't fret. All you need to do is drop on in and introduce yourself on Friday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 you can usually find us in good spirits and very talkative, at the VBPS Building.

Vero Green

St. Patricks Day - Its that time of the year. Another reason for a party or a celebration. It's all about the green. St Patrick's Day that is! What is the significance? If you are Irish it's quit the celebration. If you were married on the day then it's your anniversary. If you were born on that day its your birthday.

There are Irish books, beer, balls, blarney, big boys, bad boys, and beauties. Lets not forget Irish pubs, restaurants, jokes, music, language, and so much more. You can find out about the people, the land, potatoes and the immigration. Just look on the web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_people. Lets not forget the LUCK of the IRISH. Around Vero keep your eyes open and you will see the Vero Irish clan called the Irish American Society.

About a dinner - So guess who is having a St Patrick Day Dinner - the Vero Beach Power Squadron. The dinner is only $10 each. Come join us on Sunday March 15 at 6:00 at 301 Acacia Road, Vero Beach, FL, next to the Barber Bridge. The fare is corn beef and cabbage.

Vero Beach Power Squadron Raft-Up in Indian River

Vero Beach Power Squadron Raft-Up in Indian River

This is a community event sponsored by the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS), a local non-profit boating organization who promote Safe Boating, thru education and practical experience. They have a few of these raft-ups during the year.

This one happened today, 2/28/09, at Hole In the Wall in Indian River in Vero Beach, Florida. There were 15 powerboats and 74 people. I was on board one of the boats and I can say it was a perfect day to be on the water. It was sunny all day with a slight breeze until early afternoon when the wind started to pick up.

The event starts at everyone’s boat dock and they pick the times to depart. Their departure depends on a lot of variables, which I will not get into. The key element is predicting arrival times relative to boat size. The rational is that you want the bigger boats to get there first.

There is a Raft Master, Harold Leh. He contacts the various vessel captains via VHF radio Channel 69 in as they approach and provides direction about who ties up to whom and in what sequence. This affair starts in the middle and works outward. Typically, one of the larger and heavier boats will be the Anchor Boat using an oversized anchor and long chain. When possible, the largest and heaviest boats are placed in the center of the raft up with the boats getting smaller as the boats raft-up to the left and to the right sides. If all goes well you have something like what is depicted in the photo.

City Manager, Jim Gabbard, visits VBPS

It was the Friday Night Social (FNS) at the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). These socials are held at the VBPS Building at 301 Acacia Road, right next to the William Barber Bridge.

My wife and I went early last night. We read an email from our Commander Bill Heimbaugh, earlier in the week that promised a great hors d'oeuvres selection and he also mentioned something about a special guest, who was invited.

Our Friday night host, the Boarmans, had invited our Vero Beach City Manager, Mr. Jim Gabbard, who did make an appearance. I met him and took the opportunity to shoot a few photos of the early birds and our guest of honor. Bette Juliano also took pictures and hers came out better than mine so I put hers in the story.

Mr. Robert W. Boarman, (AKA Woody) was spending his time speaking with Mr. Gabbard about the club, what we do, how we serve the community and introducing him to members as they came in the building. His lovely wife, Karen, along with Krysta and others were serving the hungry crowd.

It was a great Friday Night Social.

Boaters - No Sea Um

At a recent Indian River boating event we had an experience that most boaters prefer they don’t. These things happen to good people. Its sudden and you don’t know its coming. It puts a damper on the day and usually is not cheap.

I was invited on an outing aboard a very nice boat. It promised to be a beautiful sunny day on the Indian River. During the event our boat encountered a “ No Sea Um”.

That’s the object underwater that some boaters encounter while cruising. It usually not marked on a chart, causes damage to the boat, mostly at the props, causes the engine to quit and brings the boat to an abrupt jolting stop.

Our story about the encounter drew a lot of attention at a luncheon the same day. A few people felt for our Captain who was taking it all in good spirits. Some wanted the details so we, 9 total aboard, shared our individual versions of the account with others.

I had written a version of the day, which I will call “The Original Hit”. You can’t find that story any more. It was revised and re-released after extensive editing. I had shared the original story with some of the passengers and our captain and released it to YourHub.

It seems some of the facts may have been incorrect about the impact location. This was further demonstrated to me by a return visit to the scene of the encounter.

I toyed with a few titles while rewriting this story. Poker Run a Hit, Underwater Obstruction, Grounded at Vero Isles, No Sea Umm, After the fact, A Thursday Conclusion, Investigating A Sea Tail and Bad Finger.

Look around on YourHub and you can get the REST of The Story.

GOOD FOR YOU

“Good for you”

There was a general meeting held by the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). At that meeting a Personal Floatation Devise was awarded to Leonard Frosina. He along with three other VBPS members completed the United States Power Squadron Vessel Safety Examiner program. Good for you.

The mission of the program is to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage and environmental impact while maximizing the safe use and enjoyment of U.S. waterways by recreational boaters. The Vessel Safety Check process is one of “prevention through education, outreach and volunteer compliance” helping recreational boaters to gain a respect for the boating environment.

The VSC Program also helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws, particularly with regard to the carriage of safety equipment while raising boater awareness about safety and environmental issues through voluntary contact by a Vessel Examiner (VE). VE discussions with recreational boaters is designed to motivate maintaining and operating their boats in a safe manner, taking boating safety courses to increase their knowledge and skills in boating, and promoting safe boating.

The VBPS has VEs’ that will be happy to perform the service on your boat in and around Vero Beach. You can call for an appointment (Jack Kruiten 772-468-0550, John Spilman 772-567-0408) or stop in at the VBPS building located at 301 Acacia Road, Vero Beach. The best time to catch us is on Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30 at the social. For more on the VBPS see www.verobeachps.com/

March Sales VBPS - YBS

VBPS - YBS March 7, 2009

What’s a VBPS - YBS? It happens once a year at the Vero Beach Power Squadron
(VBPS) building in Vero Beach. It’s the VBPS Yard and Bake Sale(YBS).

There are lots of old, some new, some slightly used and some really abused, treasures. This year it’s planned for March 7 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, so mark your calendar. The prices are right and bring an appetite. The ladies cook up batches of goodies (cookies, cakes, candies). Last year they had hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages. Its all for sale.

Donations - VBPS members donate all the treasures over a few months prior to the sale. A lot of the members bring the items to the squadron building, which are then moved by volunteers to a storage unit until the sale. If the items are big or you have a lot and need someone to pick up your donations you just call in and someone comes and takes the items to storage. A few days prior to the sale a group of guys with trucks, station wagons and SUVs, meet at storage and bring all the great stuff to the building. That’s when the fun starts. Lots of people pitch in and separate and mark as much as possible. The idea is to mark it all but somehow, without fail; items get out without being priced.

What to expect - As the VBPS is a boating group there will be lots of boating type stuff – line/rope, anchors, lights, PFDs, nautical books, tools, props, fishing gear, reels, flippers, and much more. I already mentioned the food. And of course household items – chairs, furniture, TVs, radios, computers, printers, bric-a-brac, dishes, plates, art pieces, wall hangings, clothes (hats, purses, gloves, jackets, and more) jewelry, collectables, bicycles and lots of books – hardback and paper backs for a quarter and up.

Community Support - After the sale the remaining treasures are donated to Habitat for Humanity. They actually bring an empty truck to our location and park it there until we are done. At the close of the sale the VBPS members all pitch in and load up the truck, which is picked up later in the day and returned to Habitat, where they unload it.

Some items that are on the Homeless Family Center list of things they would like are set aside (bikes, TVs, computer stuff) and after the sale these items are taken to the center.

Moneys Collected - Money collected all goes into the VBPS General Fund and is used on functions during the year to support activities for its members and the local community. The latest community event sponsored by the VBPS was for the Indian River Boys and Girls Club Fishing Day.

Website - More information about the VBPS can be obtained at www.verobeachps.com. If you would like a better idea on what they have sold in the past (old yard sale photos) click on “Photo Albums” on the left side of the webpage…then click on “Garage Sale March 1, 2008.”
