Social Media Marketing - Ensign

Spreading the Word using FREE Social Media
The Vero Beach Power Squadron has adopted a JUST DO IT policy when it comes to public relations and marketing. What that means if it can be done with very little effort and it does not cost you anything but some time, we JUST DO IT!
What I am talking about is using available FREE social media to spread the word. How much return on investment we are receiving is non quantifiable, at this time. I do know that the experts say the more places you are visible the more likely you are to get noticed.  Social media marketing which is known as SMO Social Media Optimization benefits organizations and individuals by providing an additional channel for customer support, a means to gain customer and competitive insight, and a method of managing their reputation online. In 2009 we saw exponential growth of social media. According to Nielsen Online, Twitter alone grew 1,382% year-over-year in February, registering a total of just more than 7 million unique visitors in the US for the month. Meanwhile, Facebook continued to outpace MySpace. So what could social media look like in 2010?
In 2010, social media will get even more popular, more mobile, and more exclusive. That mom and dad have joined Facebook is no longer news. What is astonishing is the rate of growth in the number of Baby Boomers joining sites like Facebook, which between this year and last has skyrocketed. Social media use among internet users aged 65 and older grew 100 percent last year, so that one in four (26 percent) people in that age group online are now logging in. The most popular platforms include: Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace and  Reddit.
In light of those comments the VBPS jumped in with both feet. You may find us everywhere. Here are a few links

There is lots more but I think you are getting the picture, so to speak. You may ask how do we measure our success with all this information out in cyberspace. Here is my response. Do a Google search for Verobeachpowersquadron and see what you get. Do any search over the internet using combinations that include - vero beach power squadron, or vbps, or vero beach power and click on web tab, photos tab, news tab, video tab and see what you get. What you will discover is that we are out there.

Vero’s New Bridge

Sent on 12/14/10 to editor@verobeach32963.com

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS), with a facility at 301 Acacia Road, Vero Beach 32963, occasionally referred to as Vero’s Finest Boating Club, has scheduled the 55th Annual Change of Watch (COW).  It will be held at the Vero Beach Yacht Club January 9, 2011.   At this event the new bridge officers are introduced. These six will be at the helm in charge of the VBPS for the year 2011.

For your information and consideration.

Bob Scully
VBPS Public Relations Officer

*****************************************************************************************
It was really a fine evening. After all, we were indoors with a lot of friends, music was playing in the background and many conversations were underway. The mood was festive. It was cocktail hour and the party was just about to get underway. Everyone was all dressed up. There were even people in uniforms. A very dashing crowd indeed.
As you entered the Vero Beach Yacht Club at the front entrance was a 3 feet by 5 feet poster with all the names of the attendees and a seating plan for each table. At 1800 hours an announcement was made and a small crowd assembled by the front entrance and the meeting was called to order. In came the flags (the American Flag and the United States Power Squadron Ensign), followed by numerous Vero Beach Power Squadron members who were introduced as they entered. These were the incoming bridge as well as those leaving the bridge in a ceremony know as Change of Watch.
There was the introduction of officers, an invocation, the pledge of allegiance an introduction of honored guests and finally dinner was served. After dinner awards were presented for service to the VBPS, there was a retiring commanders speech, a dismissal of the existing bridge, a presentation of the past commanders flag, the installation of the new commander and new bridge officers, and of course the new commander's acceptance speech. Pictures were taken to memorialize the occasion.
That said let me introduce to you the 2011 Vero Beach Power Squadron Bridge Officers….Commander - Janet Leh, Executive Officer - Bob Scully, Education Officer - Alan Ebstein, Administrative Officer - Judy Peschio Treasurer –Peter Brown, Secretary – Nora Lichty.

No Fleas Under the Oaks

The first Annual Rotary Club Nautical Flea Market held Saturday (11/6) and Sunday (11/7) was a huge success, according to Dick Carlin, Vendor Chairman.

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) supported the Rotary Club by participating in the event and spreading the word about the great boating group they have here in Vero Beach, the boating education program we have established for 2011 and the many benefits you get by being a member. You don’t need to own a boat to be a member. For more about the squadron go to www.verobeachps.com or http://vbps2010.blogspot.com/

Many vendors set up Friday. That’s what the VBPS did .On Saturday it felt like we were up north and I swear I could see snowflakes forming. In spite of the cool weather there was a huge turnout. Sunday was overcast and cold so there was not as much foot traffic. If you went, you would have seen lots of stuff for sale. New and old nautical things, art, fishing gear, jewelry, tools, line, anchors, brass balls, bells, ships wheels, light fixtures, knives, books, games, glasses, teak furniture, carvings, art, necklaces, bags, shoes, old cars, new cars, motorcycles, cabinets, food, coffee, beer, wine, water, and much more.

One of the VBPS new members had the booth next door. It is Captain Chris Yacht Services and we spent some time getting to know Chris and Alyse Caldwell. They are a new boat service here in Vero, have many years at sea and a 44 ft powerboat, which they use to train others on (www.captainchrisyachtservices.com).

A slow walk around the park was in order to really take it all in, there was so much. I was a volunteer and manned a booth. Occasionally I took a break and walked the grounds. Every time I made the rounds I would find something new that I had missed during my prior walkabouts.

Special thanks to the following VBPS volunteers who put time in at the booth promoting the VBPS at the Rotary Club Nautical Flea Market at Riverside Park – Larry and Judy Lott, Jim and Judy Ward, Janet and Harold Leh, Jan Paul, Barbara Scully, Sheree and Doug Gough, Charlie and Chris Pope, and John Spilman.

The VBPS Optimist Dingy was on display. What’s and Opti Dinghy you ask? It’s a small boat (4 X 8 feet) built here in Vero by various individuals, both young and not so young. If you would like to learn more about the Youth Sailing Foundation (YSF) of Indian River County stop in at the facility located in the Vero Beach Marina boat storage hanger next to the Vero Beach Yacht Club.

The YSF, a non-profit group, is supported by the VBPS members and many other local individuals and businesses. Supporters are interested in teaching the youngsters how to build and sail these vessels in our local waters. The VBPS as well of some of its members have purchased Opti kits and donate them back to the YSF. These marine plywood kits are assembled, sanded, painted, rigged and then sailed in and around Indian River by youngster’s ages 6-16 year old. You may see these fine vessels and the kids in action sailing in around the Vero Beach mooring fields on Saturdays practicing. For more on the YSF go to  http://www.ysfirc.org/ and http://theverobeachoptimistdingy.blogspot.com/

Community Service Support

Thank you Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS)

The Vero Beach Power Squadron donated the facility at 301Acacia Road to several 2010 Census Groups. The facility was used to collect data obtained by the enumerators (the field agents), from the Vero Beach residents during the last few months.

There were numerous phases of the 2010 Census and many teams working various areas in and around Indian River County.

One phase called Non Response Follow-up or NRFU had a team of 18 individuals, all local residents, who worked for the US Department of Commerce US Census Bureau. They met at the VBPS daily in May and June. This group worked a defined area of Vero Beach and met at the VBPS to turn in Enumerator Questionnaires (EQs).

The second phase defined as Non Response follow-up (NRFU) Vacate Delete Check (VDC) also met at the VBPS. This was a follow-up to the last go around and included cases for housing units that had not been done before. A team of 15 individuals met at the VBPS in July.

The 3rd phase was called Non Response Follow-up Residual or NRFU RES. A group of 10 met during August at 10:30 am daily to turn in completed enumerator questionnaires, binders and timesheets.

All the action for the groups mentioned has been completed and in most cases all bags, badges and other government materials have been returned to the Local Census Office in Port St Lucie.

The NRFU, NRFU VDC and the NRFU RES Teams would like to thank the VBPS for allowing us to meet at your facility over the last few months.

REgistration Insert

Carole Jean Jordan, Tax Collector
Indian River County
P. O. Box 1509

Attention: Mr. Craig E Lombard, CFCA

Subject: Registration Insert - Public Boating Class at the Vero Beach Power Squadron

Dear Mr. Lombard:

Thank you for speaking with me recently on the noted subject. As I mentioned we, the Vero Beach Power Squadron, are evaluating the feasibility of including an insert in the registration renewal envelopes that are sent out in Indian River County. My original thinking was that these inserts would go to just the vessel owners, as the classes we offer throughout the year are related to boating education.

From our conversation I learned the following. The registration forms sent by mail do not differentiate between vehicles and vessels, there are approximately 5000 envelopes mailed out a month, and the mailing task is done by subcontractor (CDM) who I would need to deal with, once we have approval from your office.

The attached sample is what was distributed in St Lucie County. My intent is to have something similar designed and coordinated with the various agencies (Indian River County Commissioners, the Sheriffs Officer, et al) then printed and handed off for insertion with the registration renewals.

As I mentioned we have a website www.verobeachps.com and a blog spot http://vbps2010.blogspot.com/ and there is a write up on us in the January Vero Beach Magazine (page 179). We hold classes at the VBPS facility 301 Acacia Road just across the Barber Bridge. The course material cost range is from $20 to $50, depending on the course. Qualified member instructors teach our courses.

I look forward to discussing this more. If you have any questions please contact me at 772-933-1173 or by email at scullybob@comcast.net. I would also like to invite you and your staff to a Friday Night Social from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. As always – “You don’t need to own a boat to take a class or be a member.”

Vero Beach Power Squadron has COW!!!!!!!!

To: TC Palm ( Press Journal)
Dear Brightman Brock,
Title: Vero Beach Power Squadron has COW!!!!!!!!

There is a Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) Change of Watch (COW) being held tonight starting at 6 at the Vero Beach Yacht Club. About 100 local residents will be attending. There are about 300 members in Vero Beach.

Basically it’s a once a year event where the elected Bridge Officers are put in place to lead the affairs of this fine boating club for the coming year. It may be worth doing a story and taking a few pictures for the Press Journal. If you want to see a few photos of last years event go to the website, pictures and look for change of watch 2009. If you want more background about the VBPS check out the blog, which also has the first quarter master schedule.

My norm is to write stories and post to YourNews but I was thinking that it makes more sense for you folks to cover local events for the newspaper, as that’s what you do.

Please let me know if I sent this email to the right place. If not would you be so kind as to forward it to the right person at the paper. If you have any questions please call me at 772-933-1173, send me an email or drop in on a Friday Night Social from 5:30 to 7:30.

Hapy New Year Vero Beach

Happy New Year from the Vero Beach Power Squadron

We just wanted to tell all the boaters in Indian River County who are not members of the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) Happy New Year.

We would also like to extend an invitation to join us at a social at our facility to welcome the New Year and meet some new friends who have a similar interest. The first Friday Social of the year is coming up on January 8. It starts at 5:30 and we encourage you to stop in.

What we are looking for is a few good men and women who have a love of the water, boats, social activity, civic service, fine dining, cruising and adventure. Our event calendar for 2010 includes a lot of fun stuff you will be missing out on if you aren’t with us.

Try it you’ll like it. There are 6-9 raft ups coming up. That’s when those who have boats invite those who don’t, to join them aboard vessels for a day on the water. A destination is selected on the Indian River and all the boats meet, tie up together and hang out for the day. It’s a great way to meet new people and checkout the various boats that members have. That’s my favorite part of the day.

One spot, which is a VBPS tradition is a place called Hole-in-the-Wall on the Indian River near Johns Island. Another is the Ft Pierce inlet on the left side of the channel as you head to sea. Last year it was quite interesting to watch all the boats that were tied together swing 180 degrees, as the tide changed direction. Very impressive indeed! So if you want to join us on a raft up, please do, but contact us first to verify the date and spot.

So from all of us at the VBPS to all of you boaters in Indian River County…Boating is fun and if you join us we commit to show you how to make it more enjoyable.
