VBPS and Albertsons LLC

One of Albertsons Core Values is “Individually and collectively, we pledge to be active and responsible citizens of our communities.” We proudly support organizations in the communities where we do business with cash and products donated through our division offices and our stores. Albertsons LLC has a long history of supporting events and projects in our schools and communities. To better assist you, we are providing the following donation guidelines. The Community Partners Program is a way to reward organizations in the community for shopping at Albertsons. Organization supporters use a key tag when shopping at Albertsons to earn credit for the Organization.

How much can my Organization Earn?

Each Organization can earn up to $6000 a quarter or $24,000 a year
1% back on the organizations sales per quarter
5% back on sales over $50,000 per quarter
If a school spends $60,000 in a quarter they will earn the following:
$50,000 x 1% = $500 +
$10,000 x 5% = $500 = $1,000 total contribution

What Organizations are eligible to Participate?
All non-profits are eligible to participate. While we prefer that schools and youth organizations take advantage of this opportunity the community partners program is now available to pet organizations, environmental groups, and Habitat for Humanity just to name a few.

City Manager, Jim Gabbard, visits VBPS

It was the Friday Night Social (FNS) at the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). These socials are held at the VBPS Building at 301 Acacia Road, right next to the William Barber Bridge.

My wife and I went early last night. We read an email from our Commander Bill Heimbaugh, earlier in the week that promised a great hors d'oeuvres selection and he also mentioned something about a special guest, who was invited.

Our Friday night host, the Boarmans, had invited our Vero Beach City Manager, Mr. Jim Gabbard, who did make an appearance. I met him and took the opportunity to shoot a few photos of the early birds and our guest of honor. Bette Juliano also took pictures and hers came out better than mine so I put hers in the story.

Mr. Robert W. Boarman, (AKA Woody) was spending his time speaking with Mr. Gabbard about the club, what we do, how we serve the community and introducing him to members as they came in the building. His lovely wife, Karen, along with Krysta and others were serving the hungry crowd.

It was a great Friday Night Social.

VBPS a HIT

Boaters - No Sea Um

At a recent Indian River boating event we had an experience that most boaters prefer they don’t. These things happen to good people. Its sudden and you don’t know its coming. It puts a damper on the day and usually is not cheap.

I was invited on an outing aboard a very nice boat. It promised to be a beautiful sunny day on the Indian River. During the event our boat encountered a “ No Sea Um”.

That’s the object underwater that some boaters encounter while cruising. It usually not marked on a chart, causes damage to the boat, mostly at the props, causes the engine to quit and brings the boat to an abrupt jolting stop.

Our story about the encounter drew a lot of attention at a luncheon the same day. A few people felt for our Captain who was taking it all in good spirits. Some wanted the details so we, 9 total aboard, shared our individual versions of the account with others.

I had written a version of the day, which I will call “The Original Hit”. You can’t find that story any more. It was revised and re-released after extensive editing. I had shared the original story with some of the passengers and our captain and released it to YourHub.

It seems some of the facts may have been incorrect about the impact location. This was further demonstrated to me by a return visit to the scene of the encounter.

I toyed with a few titles while rewriting this story. Poker Run a Hit, Underwater Obstruction, Grounded at Vero Isles, No Sea Umm, After the fact, A Thursday Conclusion, Investigating A Sea Tail and Bad Finger.

Look around on YourHub and you can get the REST of The Story.

GOOD FOR YOU

“Good for you”

There was a general meeting held by the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). At that meeting a Personal Floatation Devise was awarded to Leonard Frosina. He along with three other VBPS members completed the United States Power Squadron Vessel Safety Examiner program. Good for you.

The mission of the program is to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage and environmental impact while maximizing the safe use and enjoyment of U.S. waterways by recreational boaters. The Vessel Safety Check process is one of “prevention through education, outreach and volunteer compliance” helping recreational boaters to gain a respect for the boating environment.

The VSC Program also helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws, particularly with regard to the carriage of safety equipment while raising boater awareness about safety and environmental issues through voluntary contact by a Vessel Examiner (VE). VE discussions with recreational boaters is designed to motivate maintaining and operating their boats in a safe manner, taking boating safety courses to increase their knowledge and skills in boating, and promoting safe boating.

The VBPS has VEs’ that will be happy to perform the service on your boat in and around Vero Beach. You can call for an appointment (Jack Kruiten 772-468-0550, John Spilman 772-567-0408) or stop in at the VBPS building located at 301 Acacia Road, Vero Beach. The best time to catch us is on Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30 at the social. For more on the VBPS see www.verobeachps.com/

March Sales VBPS - YBS

VBPS - YBS March 7, 2009

What’s a VBPS - YBS? It happens once a year at the Vero Beach Power Squadron
(VBPS) building in Vero Beach. It’s the VBPS Yard and Bake Sale(YBS).

There are lots of old, some new, some slightly used and some really abused, treasures. This year it’s planned for March 7 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, so mark your calendar. The prices are right and bring an appetite. The ladies cook up batches of goodies (cookies, cakes, candies). Last year they had hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages. Its all for sale.

Donations - VBPS members donate all the treasures over a few months prior to the sale. A lot of the members bring the items to the squadron building, which are then moved by volunteers to a storage unit until the sale. If the items are big or you have a lot and need someone to pick up your donations you just call in and someone comes and takes the items to storage. A few days prior to the sale a group of guys with trucks, station wagons and SUVs, meet at storage and bring all the great stuff to the building. That’s when the fun starts. Lots of people pitch in and separate and mark as much as possible. The idea is to mark it all but somehow, without fail; items get out without being priced.

What to expect - As the VBPS is a boating group there will be lots of boating type stuff – line/rope, anchors, lights, PFDs, nautical books, tools, props, fishing gear, reels, flippers, and much more. I already mentioned the food. And of course household items – chairs, furniture, TVs, radios, computers, printers, bric-a-brac, dishes, plates, art pieces, wall hangings, clothes (hats, purses, gloves, jackets, and more) jewelry, collectables, bicycles and lots of books – hardback and paper backs for a quarter and up.

Community Support - After the sale the remaining treasures are donated to Habitat for Humanity. They actually bring an empty truck to our location and park it there until we are done. At the close of the sale the VBPS members all pitch in and load up the truck, which is picked up later in the day and returned to Habitat, where they unload it.

Some items that are on the Homeless Family Center list of things they would like are set aside (bikes, TVs, computer stuff) and after the sale these items are taken to the center.

Moneys Collected - Money collected all goes into the VBPS General Fund and is used on functions during the year to support activities for its members and the local community. The latest community event sponsored by the VBPS was for the Indian River Boys and Girls Club Fishing Day.

Website - More information about the VBPS can be obtained at www.verobeachps.com. If you would like a better idea on what they have sold in the past (old yard sale photos) click on “Photo Albums” on the left side of the webpage…then click on “Garage Sale March 1, 2008.”
