Change of Watch

The VERO BEACH POWER SQUADRON, a non-profit organization, held their 52nd ANNUAL CHANGE OF WATCH on SUNDAY, 13 JANUARY 2008 at the VERO BEACH YACHT CLUB, 3601 RIO VISTA BLVD, VERO BEACH, FL 32963. Another fine social event.

What is the Change of Watch, you might ask. I promise this will be a short story.

Once a year the the Vero Beach Power Squadron selects/elects nominees, usually in December, for bridge officers and elected committies. At the Annual Change of Watch, held in Januray, it becomes official and is in effect for the year. The photo a shows the 2008 VBPS Bridge Officers (from left to right) - Commander, Executive Officer, Educational Officer, Administrative Officer, Secretary and Treasurer. There is alot more to it but I promised a short story.

If you want more you can visit the website at www.verobeachps.org and click around. If that gets your interest and you want to participate ....please visit with us at the Friday night socials at the Club House located next to the launch ramp next to the bridge at MacWilliam Park.

As well as our monthly meetings we hold an informal Friday night social in the squadron building from 5:30 to 7:30. This gives all our members the opportunity to socialize on a non-boating basis and to meet new and visiting members.

TIME TO SIGN UP FOR USPS COURSES
The beginning of the calendar year signals a rebirth of the USPS courses, especially the elective courses. Please think hard about the fun you can have and the knowledge you can gain by participating with your friends in a really inexpensive USPS course.

Jim Crawfis is planning to start a Cruise Planning Course a week from next Wednesday (Jan 23, 2008). Please call him to let him know that you want to join the class. His phone number is 772 770-1255. The cost will be $40.00 for materials. Kathie and I took this course from Jim last year and found it valuable and fun. Ask Jim about his two-year project aboard his sailboat where he cruised the Atlantic to the southern tip of Spain, into the Med., and back again with only a sextant, and a couple radios. Lots of fun and adventure.
---------------------------------------
Contact Joe Walsh if you want to sign up for the Engine Maintenance Course. This course has just been updated and modernized and Joe is just the man to instruct it. Ask him about all the years he served in the Navy keeping the ships moving with his vast knowledge of diesel engines. His phone number is 772 978-

1626. The cost will be $40.00 for materials. Let him know your schedules so that he can find a suitable time and day to conduct the classes.
David Connolly is ready to begin his course in Basic and Advanced Sail. Basic Sail is all about terminology and learning about sailing and sailboats and Advanced Sail really gets into the fun parts of sailing (going fast when you pick the right tack and take advantage of the winds), what to do in really heavy (ugly weather) sailing, handling emergencies while sailing, etc. The cost will be $40.00 for materials. Call David to let him know your schedules so that he can plan when you will meet. His phone number is 772 564-6858.

Call Bob McCurdy to let him know that you want to take the Weather Course. This great course has recently been updated and vastly improved. I took it last year from Bob and really enjoyed it. The cost will be $50.00 for materials (you get two books plus lots of other valuable stuff) and I guarantee you will have fun and enjoy the class. Call Bob at 772 569-0061

Marine Electronics. You will have to wait a while for this one. John Spilman has his students in the middle of this course at this time. This course has also been updated and is quite comprehensive. Let John know that you want to take it and perhaps we can schedule it again during the year (with John or another instructor). His phone number is 772 567-0408. The cost will be $40.00 for materials.

Now for the regular courses.

The Piloting Class is being planned by John Burnham. Contact John if you want a really updated (electronic navigation, etc.) course that is the backbone of the more advanced piloting classes. John has been teaching this course for numerous years and I always get rave reviews of what his students gained from the course. Please contact him (soon) at 772 770-2855 to let him know your schedule.
Advanced Piloting will be conducted following Piloting and Seamanship will be conducted following the Squadron Boating Class. Stay tuned for future dates and times.

Please act fast and contact the appropriate instructor (or me) to take part in our great course offerings. Let me know if you desire any other course offering (I will be conducting an Instructor Development Class soon).

Hi Bob,

I've been out of the office for a few days, but I did get your message re: the invoice. I am working with accounting to fix the problem - the $ 311.52 is correct. I am glad to hear about the results of the ad and that the Full Page idea is being considered - please let me know how I can help. As re: a sample format for the full page, please take a look at today's paper (Mon 1/14) - the back page of the local section (B-16) is a similar idea, with news etc. at the top of the page - the only difference would be that (instead of Falasari Rugs) there would be 12-14 small ads on the bottom half of the page.

Patrick

Thanks for you help getting the ad in the paper. My understanding is that we got 14 people who signed up for the class.

Need your help with the bill sent for the ad. Our discussion regarding price was $311 and we have been charged $371.52 ( reference invoice # 1545782 billing date 12/31/07 billed account number 11510860 billed to Robert Boarman, newspaper reference 1964734).

Your proposal regarding the "No charge to the VBPS with 12-15 sponsors" full page ad is being addressed. I have good feedback from a few people I have spoken with at the squadron. I will work it and get back to you.

Do you have a sample format layout of the full page ad you can email me or a sample of something you did for some other group, so I can use it when I present the pitch to our advertisers as well as the VBPS folks?

Regards,

Bob Scully

SAFE BOATING

The Squadron Boating Course is a course for all boaters including skippers of a family cruiser, sailing enthusiasts, personal watercraft (PWC) operators, hunters or fishermen operating an outboard utility boat, and canoe and kayak paddlers,. It covers the basics you need to know to safely and legally operate your boat, such as basic boating terminology, boat handling, water sports safety, PWCs, legally required equipment and other boating laws and regulations, right-of-way rules between boats, and marine radio operation. The course is meant to be of interest to the whole family, and we encourage your family to attend as a group. Beyond the basic safety material, additional material covers the fundamentals of reading nautical charts, of using a chart to plot and follow a safe course, and the basics of using a Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigation. In addition to practice charts and plotting tools, the materials supplied with the course also include a CD-ROM containing Maptech’s Chart Navigator computer program, allowing the student to learn about this exciting new electronic technology. Call 772-770-2855.

There are now two classes, The Squadron Boating Class and America's Boating Course, both designed to be useful to all boaters, from the fisherman in an outboard to the skipper of a large cruiser or sailboat. All boaters are subject to nautical rules and regulations. Skippers should learn and respect traditional boating courtesies. The courses are meant to be of interest to the entire family; older children are welcome. We encourage your family to attend as a group.

The course will teach basic seamanship, an understanding of navigational aids, items required to be on your boat, trailer and boat handling, the art of tying knots and much more. Professionally trained instructors utilizing the latest in enhanced, visual aids technology will make attendance a truly enjoyable learning experience. Those students who are 21 years old or younger and who successfully complete the course, will have met Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission requirements entitling them to receive a Florida State Boaters License.
At the conclusion of the class an examination is held and those who successfully complete course will be given a certificate which is recognized by United States Power Squadrons® the Marine Police and many Insurance Companies.
The course is open to all members of the public, from teenagers upwards. For those under 21, successful completion of this course will enable that person to obtain a Florida Operators License.
You do not have to own a boat to take this course, you may have to handle someone else's boat in an emergency. Would you know how to cope? Take the class, learn from the experts. SEE http://verobeachps.org/ FOR MORE INFO
