Ron,
Thanks for contacting the VBPS and I am copying our PR person, BOB Scully,
in order to make sure he is aware of your publication.
The information, as you quoted is correct, however suggest that you use "
Vessel Examiner" in stead of VE. I also added a line, after "there is no
charge for this service".
Thanks again for contacting me.
Jack.

Great! I'd be happy to include some pictures from your December 7 event and will try to get there, but I've already got 3 other events on my calendar for that day. What time is the event? If I can't make it though, you can always email photos to me at this email address.

I've attached a copy of our non-profit media guidelines which gives information on deadlines, coverage opportunities, photo guidelines, etc.

I'm currently working on the Upcoming Events section for our January issue, so if you'd like me to include any upcoming fundraisers, let me know.

Thanks very much, Mary

Dear Mary Schenkel,

I just picked up the Vero Life Magazine and after looking thru it I decided to send this email.

I am the Public Relations Officer for the Vero Beach Power Squadron. We are a non profit group that has been in Vero for over 50 years. We are a boating group involved in civic service, boater education and social activity for its members. We have a web site www.verobeachps.com and are located next to the Barber Bridge on the waters edge of the Indian River.

We hold a lot of events during the year. Coming in December is the Christmas Dinner and I thought that would be a good " Photobook" event. This event will be held at the Vero Beach Yatch Club on Sunday December 7th.

If you have questions or want more on the VBPS please feel free to call me at 772-933-1173 or email me at scullybob@comcast.net.

SBC in January

The Vero Beach Power Squadron is kicking of the New Year with a Squadron Boating Course on Tuesday evenings for you here in Vero Beach. The class will be held at 301 Acacia Road in Vero Beach, just over the Barber Bridge, next to the boat launching area.
The class dates are January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10, 17. The class materials cost is $45. The class will start at 7pm and go to 9pm. Please pre-register by calling Margaret at 772-770-2855.
The information bellow was extracted from the USPS website, and does a great job of explaining the course.
“Learn the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation, and basic piloting in one comprehensive classroom course. As an additional feature, this newly revised course includes a digital chart training CD and instructional material on modern navigation techniques as well.
This course meets state specific and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) requirements for certification. And completion of the course is accepted by most insurance companies. Since 1914, individual squadrons of USPS have provided courses as a service to the boating public to over 3 million boaters.
You will learn the basics of what you need to safely and comfortably go on the water with your boat. This newly revised comprehensive course includes lessons on seamanship, boat handling, boat types, rules of the road, navigation aids, regulations, adverse conditions, marine VHF radio, knots, trailering and introductory piloting. The course includes an extensive course book, training charts, and basic navigation tools. As a special feature it also includes an introduction to digital charting on CD-ROM in an appendix, and an overview of electronic navigation. Maptech's Chart Navigator Training CD includes software and digital charts to gain familiarity with this exciting new technology.
Many of today’s recreational boaters utilize GPS receivers and perform electronic, waypoint navigation. Waypoint navigation using a handheld GPS is somewhat different from traditional dead reckoning. With a GPS you have good information about where you are in terms of latitude and longitude, but the GPS doesn't tell you what is around you or beneath your boat. Using waypoints, you have precise information about the bearing and distance from your current location to the waypoints, but the GPS doesn't know what may be in the way. The use of charts is explained in this course as the essential step to provide key information required for a safe passage.
Learning to boat the right way is important and the increased knowledge will enhance your safety on the water and your enjoyment of the sport. The Squadron Boating Course usually can be completed in six or seven two-hour classroom sessions. The course is meant to be of interest to the entire family; children are welcome. We encourage your family to attend as a group.
For some, time is short and the introductory piloting and digital charting topics are less essential. USPS offers an alternative course, Boat Smart, which is useful to all boaters, from the fisherman in an outboard to the skipper of a cruiser or sailboat. It covers the same safe boat handling and operation material in just 8 hours. Many classes are offered in a single day and this course satisfies the state certification requirements as well.
For those who have difficulty scheduling class time, USPS offers America's Boating Course. This course can be taken online or using your computer at home. The content of America’s Boating Course, which is comparable to Boat Smart, is presented in an interesting and engaging manner on your computer. You can complete the course with an on-line exam where states permit the use of such an internet exam; or, work one-on-one with your local squadron where states require a proctored examination.
For information on the USPS public boating course closest to you, call 1-888-FOR-USPS or check out our Online Schedule. In Canada, for the CPS course, call 1-888-CPS-BOAT.
Additional USPS Educational Materials are available to the public. There are also advanced courses for our members. View or print an Adobe PDF copy of our member courses.

I spoke with Kathryn Smith, Social Editor, for the Vero Beach Magazine (old publication cover page attchment 1), on 10/6/08. Our discussion revolved around getting the VBPS Change of Watch (COW) into the VB Magazine. As we are nonprofit there is no cost as it falls under community service.

I also sent in the upcoming classes which she said would get in the magazine as well. The placement of the data sent in relates to timing. They have identified specific dates for information input and magazine publication. The class information should get in the January 2009 issue. The COW article may come out in the March 2009 publication. They make the final decisions.

She has put it (COW) on her calendar and would like to cover VBPS at the upcoming COW. She will send her photographer and one of her editors will be contacting me for a short story to go along with the photographs. This will be an exclusive package to the VB Magazine.

All photos taken at the evnet will need the names & ranks of those in the picture. The main photo (similar to the attached 2008 group shot) will be the members of the new bridge..I believe.

The data bellow is what I will send her on the upcoming event....as a draft. We have time to edit this piece and I am open to all input. Please add comments/corrections and send them to me by email. We can discuss this further by phone, email or at the Friday Night Social.

In the context of computing and software, a Trojan horse, also known as a trojan, is malware that appears to perform a desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious functions. Vero Beach Power Squadron Predicted Log Contest by Robert Scully, VBPS PRO

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) located in Vero Beach, Florida, holds a Predicted Log Contest every year. Its part of the organizations boating activity in the Indian River, which is part of the Intercostals Waterway, and provides some fun and a challenge to its members.

So this event took place one weekend in March in spite of the weatherman's prediction of showers likely, with thunderstorms after 2 pm, mostly cloudy with a high near 76, east southeast wind around 10 mph with a the chance of precipitation at 70%. The forecast was partially true. The weather was foul, mostly cloudy, it did rain and it was cold, but it wasn't real cold and it didn't rain real hard. It started to clear up as we docked the boat for the day.

There was some boat traffic after all it was Saturday. Some were sailing, so me were fishing, the police were out in their boat watching the No Wake Zone at the Barber Bridge, and of course the VBPS Members were out doing the predicted log contest.

The VBPS gang met at the waters edge of the MacWilliams Boat basin next to the squadron building. We talked for a bit and headed into the building and turned in all the paper work, which equates to our prediction

So we had a Searay (25 foot party boat) that had been reserved for the day from the Freedom Boat Club. Jack Knauss, a member in good standing and avid boater, was our observer. Observers keep score.

We had decided, after careful calculations and some conversation, that the boat speed would be a constant 1600-rpm, which is about 6.5 - 7.5 miles per hour, depending on where you are in the river. Most of you know there is a relationship to vessel speed, which also relates to the current, what time it is in relationship to the tide, whether its going in, or going out or its at a lull. We had talked about the wind factor the prior day, which was a factor in determining vessel speed for the contest. There was NO wind most of this day.

The trip was approximately 20 miles long and took us about 3 plus hours to complete. I heard one boat did the trip in about 50 minutes. First place winner was Captain John Spilman. That means he had the least amount of variance to his predicted log. I was on his boat. There is nothing wrong with being on a winning boat. So if you liked the story and want to get in on the action visit us at www.verobeachps.org and if you are in Vero Beach please stop in.

VBPS Goals -The VBPS ( www.verobeachps.org), with a stake in Vero Beach, is a non-profit boating safety education organization. One goal is to provide safety boating education to the public and our members. Another goal is to get involved in the Community by being a sponsor/host for special events.

Boater Education – One of the VBPS community services is safe boating education to the public and our members, which is taught by VBPS volunteers who have lots of boat knowledge.

Community Involvement – The VBPS is involved in and sponsors – Boating Education courses thru out the year, Support our Troops, blood drive, flu shoots, the Christmas boat parade and lots more.

Events - There are dinners, lunches, and numerous events to keep things interesting all year long. We hold an informal Friday night social in the squadron building from 5:30 to 7:30. This gives all our members the opportunity to socialize on a non-boating basis and to meet new and visiting members. Please stop in an introduce yourself.

Boating Activities -The Squadron's organized boating activities are cruises, rendezvous, vessel safety checks and Cooperative Charting. Any member who has a boat, power or sail, is welcome to participate, and members without boats are invited to go along as crew with another member.

News/Photos – The VBPS publishes a bi-monthly newsletter (Nautical News) and sends it out in the mail. It is also posted on our website. The USPS puts out the “Ensign”, which you will receive once you join the club.

Membership - When you join the VBPS there is lots to do and we encourage the members to get involved. We love volunteers.

Subject: A Fishing Day Story

A Fishing Day on the Indian River by Robert Scully

One mans perspective on fishing the intercostals -1 photographer, 2 boats, 3 men on one boat, 4 on another boat, 5 hours of fishing, 6 men fishing, 7 hours on the water, and 8 fish, so I hear.

So you get up early and meet the troops at the boat by 7am. Load up the gear and head out to the Indian River. By 3pm, or 7 hours later, you're back at the dock for the boat cleanup, just ahead of the inc oming rain.

It started out as a beautiful calm sunny day. On the way south we passed the various islands in the river, Harbor Branch, and headed towards the bridge in Ft Pierce, as Captain Bill pointed out various secret fishing spots along the way. We made a short stop to pick up some live shrimp for bait and went fishing just around the bend.

You could feel the excitement kicking in as the poles were baited with the shrimp and cast into the water. The fish finder on the boat consol showed fish just under the boat so that meant we were in a good spot. After an hour of casting, re-baiting hooks with no fish caught, we headed to another location at the inlet, just off the jetty rocks.

So we baited and cast once again. The boat next to us, but not with us, was catching fish, the fish finder said there was fish bellow but alas, no fish took our bait. We mana ged to catch some fishing line around our prop. Yes it was from one of our fishing pools but that happens when you keep the engine running in gear. So the captain points the boat into the middle of the channel, cuts the engine, raises the motor and I pull as much line off the hub, as I can. Now the seas are getting nasty and we pitch here and there, in and out of the troughs. It's getting scary, the captains cell phone rings, it's the other boat captain, and its time to head in and get out of the churning incoming tide.

Now were headed in at a snails pace because were in the No Wake Zone. When we get back into the intercostals the pace picks up, we go under the drawbridge and head further south, to a new fishing spot, just east of the channel. We bait the hooks; cast the line and drift with the tide. It's a phenomenon as the waves are going one way and the boat is drifting the opposite direction.

The fish finder shows the fish under the boat and we spot Dolphin feeding in the area so we know the fish are there. Finally a few hits and we get a few (3) fish on board. The big one got away as we removed the hook, he squired just enough and fell overboard. But I got a picture so we have proof. We keep one Sheepshead and threw one back. Some body rang the lunch bell and we headed in to the Tiki Hut on the Ft. Pierce Marina.

After docking we headed straight for the restaurants water closet and then we were ready for lunch. There was lot of conversation about our hours fishing, the kinds of fish caught, Charter boat fishing, 2 pound test line, 200 yards of line, and so on. Lunch was served and $100 later we were back on the boats. On the way back we were in rough waters thus we experienced the body gets a Boat Beating, combined with a few Sea Showers over the bow, and a few Body Twists.

Moving aro und on a moving boat. Not a good idea but if you must be sure to keep one hand on a stationary boat part, while you attempt this maneuver. I learned that a long time ago but got distracted, on this occasion. It's amazing how the clean fresh air, the water and the sun affect your ability to thing straight. Some call it boater's fatigue.

There was an oncoming large vessel generating a large wake, which we were about to go thru. I knew there was going to be water splashing over the bow, not a good time to be moving around or standing up, in the boat. I guess I had lost focus, because I wanted to get a shot of the boat and its wake but then I got concerned about my camera and me getting wet. I almost went head first into the boat icebox but I managed to surf it out by using balancing skills that are sometimes necessary to stay up on a boat that is being bounced around by another vessels very big wake waves. As I recall one hand was in my jacke t pocket on my camera and I grabbed at the cockpit console, as I started to pitch and bend opposite the boat movement. It happened pretty fast and it was over in seconds. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

If you have an interest on getting with the fishing group come on by the Vero Beach Power Squadron building at 301 Acacia Road next to Barber bridge at the MacWilliam Boat Basin or go online to www.verobeachps.org/.

Boat Safety for the Young.

Beverly Jones has conducted this Vero Beach Power Squadron program for 3 years and she has done it very well.

This is Glendale School "After School Program." There were 60 children present. Children are divided by age groups: 6-8; 9-11; 12-14.

They were getting educated on the proper use of a PFD and also a few pointers on how to throw a ring to pull a person to safety. After they get introduced to all this the fun part comes into play.

The VBPS also has as part of this program a Poster Contest. The kids get to do what they want and draw and color something about what they learned. These pieces of art are then entered into the contest and winners are choosen.

I understand that a few get a finacial reward.

About the service

Captain WJT, of Vero Beach, passed recently at the age of 94. He was an active member of the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) where they held a Memorial to him, today, at 11:00, at the squadron building at 301 Acacia Road next to the Barber Bridge. The included photos captured some of the activity.

There was quite a turnout from what I saw. The parking lot was full of cars and there was standing room only leading out the door. The ceremony was conduced by the Squadrons Commander, Robert F. McCurdy (SN). The Chaplin, Frank (Tom) Jones III (S) did the eulogy and some of the attendees, his stepson, neighbors and friends, told a few short stories about Bill and his past experiences with them. After the ceremony everyone was invited to partake of a few hor'derves and drinks. Many stayed to mingle and chat.

About Captain Bill

Trabilcy, William J. (P) was born in 1913. Went into the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. Was around when the King and Queen came to America. He was very active in the VBPS. He taught classes at the squadron and was a member of the Coop Charting Group.

His boat, a Grady White, got launched onto ground. It went with the dock that blew away during a hurricane. It was salvaged.

I went on a Suwannee River houseboat adventure and did some Coop Charting with him about 12 years ago up and down the Indian River. Had a few meals with him along the way at Kelley’s, Mr. Manatees, Squid Lips, Captain Hirams, and of course all the Friday Night Socials. They said he liked clams or was it oysters at Mr. Manatees on Tuesday nights.

There is more but I want his out today so I plan to add to it during the week. Please come back.

USPS University

The Vero Beach Power Squadron(VBPS), affliated with the United States power Squadron(USPS), is promoting boaters education.

The VBPS holds classes here in Vero Beach for the local boaters, year round. The classes are taught at the squadron building on the Indian River next to the Barber Bridge. The instructors are members of the VBPS and have lots of experience to add to the information provided in the books. For more on that see www.verobeachps.org/

The USPS, is getting very creative with how they get boaters smart and have come up with the USPS University at the following web page(http://www.usps.org/national/natsec/university/home.htm). They have "Online Study'' for those who preffer to get smart at home, at your own pace.

America's Boating Course is a joint project between the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons. In addition, the course has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and is accepted by most states to meet boating license or safety certification requirements.

Pelicans Life 2

Dear Friends,

I am doing some public relations work for the Vero Beach Power Squadron. If you want to find out more about them go to www.verobeachps.org/.

In my travels I get to take pictures to promote the VBPS cause and I use the photos occasionally for this very task.

I was at the squadron building, which is at the waters edge in the MacWilliams Park boat basis and I saw my friends (Mannie, Moe, Jack, Curly, Larry, Moe and friends), again. It seems that the pelicans gather here daily, to catch the fish remnants the fisherman throw away, at the cleaning area near the dock.

So here are a few pictures for your enjoyment.

Red, White and Blue

This is a two part blog. Part 1 comes from me, the VBPS and USPS. Part 2 was taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html

Part 1. Red, White AND Blue - The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) has a web page that has a blue background, white text letters and with red here and there. Check out the sight at www.verobeachps.org/

Part 2. - Red, White & Blue (taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html) What do the colors of the Flag mean? Sentimental writers and orators sometimes ascribe meanings to the colors in the flag. The practice is erroneous, as are statements on this subject attributed to George Washington and other founders of the country. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated: "The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."
