Posted flyers on

Al,

Posted flyers on the upcoming Nov 5 class at the following locations today 10/18/11.

IRC Chamber Breakfast Meeting, Majestic Bowling Alley, Longevity Max, Downtown Main Street Office, Treasure and Space Coast Radio, IRC Administrative Tax Office Lobby, Marina Captains Lounge, Marina Dock Bulletins Board, Vero Marine Center (Grady Bunch) and left extras copies at the VBPS for members to take.

Majestic Bowling wants to trade advertising spots/space. Spoke with the GM and the Marketing person who will be sending me an email. I suggested/thought we could put them (Majestic Bowling) in the Nautical News in exchange for them putting our flyers on the counter at the bowling alley anytime we held a class. The Marketing gal will send me an email with her desires/plan and I will keep you in the loop.

When I stopped at the radio station I got a business card for Brittany M. Hinger, Marketing & Promotions Director, Treasure and Space Coast Radio.  I will send her an email and see where it leads. They may do an announcement on the air. Not sure until I email her.

Dear Ms. Hinger,

I stopped by the station last week and left a flyer about an upcoming boating class -America’s Boating Course. This will be held on November 5, 2011 (9 am start time) at the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS). I hope you can get a plug in about the class on the air.

I would like to speak about VBPS with you and see what we can do to get us out on the air when we schedule courses for the public here in Vero. We are a non-profit boating organization.  Our goal is to provide safe boating education to the public and our members.

We have a blog and a website. We are on Facebook and Twitter. Here are a few links.

I look forward to speaking with you.

I was wondering if you could pass on the info below to the appropriate FL squadrons in your District (15, 22 and 8).
The FWC has a great web page which advertises, among other events, basic boating courses that are being offered statewide. (I suspect that this site is used by violators who are court mandated to take the course). It appears that this opportunity could be better utilized: While there are approximately 33 squadrons in FL (includes D23, which is mine) only 13 squadrons have posted 28 courses, Pensacola leading the pack with 7 courses. To take advantage of this free publicity, go to

and look for the titles ABC boating Safety or About Boating Safety.
First you will have to register; after receiving the FWC confirmation, send your request to list your course to Edward Cates at

edward.cates@myfwc.com with the following info:

Course Title (from web site): ABC About Boating Safety
Squadron Name If the squadron name does not describe the location, then list the nearest city (we used Melbourne for Banana River)
Date:               Time:
Place:  Name of facility
            ____________
            ____________
Boating Course: ABC3 8-hour with on-the-water boat handling instruction
Online registration allowed Your web site

2011 Safe Boating Education Department

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) 2011 Safe Boating Education Department is offering the following to the public and United States Power Squadron (USPS) Members. Classes are taught at 301 Acacia Road, Vero Beach, FL. The facility is right next to the Barber Bridge (northeast side) and the boat launch area.

These classes were developed to enhance your boating knowledge, thus making you a safer boater. Things covered in the courses include fundamentals of types of power and sailboats, handling characteristics and boat handling, marlinespike, docking and undocking, anchoring, towing, required equipment and rules of the road.

All of the classes offered to the public are posted on our community Facebook page “ Boating Education Vero Beach” http://www.facebook.com/pages/Boating-Education-Vero-Beach/185639358113430   and you may register online at www.verobeachps.com/.

Costs vary. You get fabulous discounts as a member of the USPS but you do not need to be a member to take a class.

Weekend Classes ( 8 hours)- Americas Boating Course. Cost is $35 per person for USPS members and the public.  Please pre-register. Times are 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Dates - April 23 & 24, June 18 & 19, Sept.10 & 11 and Nov. 26 & 27. Call Howard Daniels at 772-978-9769 to register for the course or if you have questions.

Seminars  USPS University is here with new programs targeted to a range of boaters and types of boating. The hallmark of this concept is the Seminar Series. The VBPS is teaching some of these and sign up sheets are posted at the building. These short seminars are targeted to specific topics and needs with a two-hour format, and valuable take-away guides. Each seminar provides credits toward the Boat Operator Certification program, and credit toward elective courses. Call Dan Thomas at 772-978-1701 for more details. Cost varies by seminar ($20 – $50). These seminars are available now. The schedule depends on the number of individuals who sign up.
Several more seminars are nearing completion and will be available soon: Knots for Mariners, Onboard Emergencies, Using Digital Charts, and Heavy Weather Sailing.

Evening Classes -7 Evening Classes  (14 hours) - This course is the same as the USPS Seamanship Course but with the addition of portions of several USPS Seminars (GPS, How to read Navigational Charts, Boat Handling, etc.). The content of this course is basically what is necessary to obtain a Captain's license. All boaters are subject to nautical rules and regulations. Skippers should learn and respect traditional boating courtesies. This course is meant to be of interest to the entire family - older children are welcome. We encourage your family to attend as a group.
Cost: Public - $90 (by joining the USPS you save $50) members $40.

At the conclusion of these classes an examination is held and those who successfully complete course will be given a certificate, which is recognized by United States Power Squadrons, the Marine Police and many insurance companies.

These courses are open to all Power Squadron members and the public, from teenagers upwards. For those under 21, successful completion of one of these courses will enable that person to obtain a Florida Operators License.

You are not required to own a boat to take these courses, but you may have to handle someone else's boat in an emergency. Would you know how to cope?  Take a class - learn from
knowledgeable people. Call Lt/Cdr Alan Ebstein at 772-462-0249 for additional information
