Pelicans Life 2

Dear Friends,

I am doing some public relations work for the Vero Beach Power Squadron. If you want to find out more about them go to www.verobeachps.org/.

In my travels I get to take pictures to promote the VBPS cause and I use the photos occasionally for this very task.

I was at the squadron building, which is at the waters edge in the MacWilliams Park boat basis and I saw my friends (Mannie, Moe, Jack, Curly, Larry, Moe and friends), again. It seems that the pelicans gather here daily, to catch the fish remnants the fisherman throw away, at the cleaning area near the dock.

So here are a few pictures for your enjoyment.

Red, White and Blue

This is a two part blog. Part 1 comes from me, the VBPS and USPS. Part 2 was taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html

Part 1. Red, White AND Blue - The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) has a web page that has a blue background, white text letters and with red here and there. Check out the sight at www.verobeachps.org/

Part 2. - Red, White & Blue (taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html) What do the colors of the Flag mean? Sentimental writers and orators sometimes ascribe meanings to the colors in the flag. The practice is erroneous, as are statements on this subject attributed to George Washington and other founders of the country. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated: "The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."

Poker Run

POKER RUN on the Indian River

Contributed by: Robert Scully on 1/22/2008

The Vero Beach Power Squadron(VBPS) will host the annual Poker Run which start at 9:30 in the morning on Saturday February 9. This is boating activity on the Indian River. Bring your boat to the launch ramp near the Barber Bidge adjacent to the Riverside Cafe.

There is a $11 donation required which will cover the hamburgers, hotdogs, soda and beer, which will be served at the squadron building following the run. The winner of the event will be presented at this time.

How it works - There are designated locations where you pick a card from the VBPS member at that location, in the Indian River. There are several locations which will be identified so you can get a card. You only get 1 card per location. There will be at least 5 stops to make, as it is a game of poker. The 3 people who have the best poker hand win the prizes. The first card will be handed out at the Vero Beach Yatch Club dock on the port side of the vessel Southern Star. She is a big one so you can't miss her. Prizes are for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

For more information call Bill at 360-0132 or stop by The Power Squadron Building after 5:00 PM on Fridays. Check out our website www.verobeachps.org/ for lots of information on this local boating organization.

Boaters Wanted

WANTED BOATERS
Contributed by: Robert Scully on 1/28/2008

The Vero Beach Power Squadron WANTS YOU as a member. Sign up NOW! Visit our website www.verobeachps.org/

- Membership is by application and is for anyone who shares our common love of boating, has passed a public boating course, and who is interested in advancing the objectives of the organization: the education of members, participation in civic programs, and the creation of an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie among members.
·Active members must be at least 16 years of age; there are no age considerations for family members.
·As well as our monthly meetings (on the second Monday of the month) we hold an informal Friday night social in the squadron building from 1730-1930. This gives all our members the opportunity to socialize on a non-boating basis and to meet new and visiting members. This is a BYOB event.
·In the boating season, on-water and off-water events, such as cruises and rendezvous, are part of our social activity
·The Squadron's organized boating activities are cruises and rendezvous. Any member who has a boat, power or sail, is welcome to participate, and members without are invited to go along as crew with another member. A Boating Activities committee plans these cruises and raft-ups and publicizes them through the local newsletter and at membership meetings. The rendezvous are picnic-like social events, and members are encouraged to arrive by boat, when possible.
·A great variety of courses to choose from: As a USPS® member, you and your family can enroll in a great variety of advanced grades and elective courses which are only available to USPS® members. These courses include Seamanship, Piloting, Celestial Navigation, Weather, Sail, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics and Cruise Planning. In addition, USPS® offers more than two dozen self study courses on such subjects as the Water Sports, Boat Insurance, Oceanography, Introduction to Sailing, Preparation for Coast Guard Licensing, and much more.
·Meeting with other boaters in our area: As a member of a local squadron (and there are approximately 450 squadrons throughout the USA, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands) you will join with other knowledgeable boaters in your area who are familiar with the local waters, the best anchorages, and marinas and boat repair shops.
·Participation in a variety of on water activities: As a USPS® member you're automatically invited to join in the squadron and district cruises, rendezvous, predicted log contests, raft up's and other boating activities.
·Savings on Boat Insurance: There are many marine insurance companies, which provide discounts to those who complete advanced boating courses. This savings can be significant.
·USPS® Networking with other members throughout the USA, Canada and even more distant areas: Thinking of boating in a river, lake or ocean far from your home? USPS® has a Port Captain program which will provide names and telephone numbers of local USPS® members who know the territory.
·Receive the official USPS® magazine: THE ENSIGN.
