Seminar Series-Boating

USPS University is here with new programs targeted to a range of boaters and types of boating. The hallmark of this concept is the Seminar Series. These short seminars are targeted to specific topics and needs with a two-hour format, and valuable take-away guides. Each seminar provides credits toward the soon to be released Boat Operator Certification program, and credit toward elective courses. The first seven of these seminars are available now. Using VHF & VHF/DSC Marine Radio Using GPS How to Use a Chart Onboard Weather Forecasting Boat Handling under Power Sail Trim and Rig Tuning Paddle Smart Several more seminars are nearing completion and will be available soon: Knots for Mariners, Onboard Emergencies, Using Digital Charts, and Heavy Weather Sailing. You need to check the USPS website for seminars near you. The VBPS is looking into supporting theses activitys here in Indian River. For more information www.verobeachps.org/

Pelicans Life 2

Dear Friends,

I am doing some public relations work for the Vero Beach Power Squadron. If you want to find out more about them go to www.verobeachps.org/.

In my travels I get to take pictures to promote the VBPS cause and I use the photos occasionally for this very task.

I was at the squadron building, which is at the waters edge in the MacWilliams Park boat basis and I saw my friends (Mannie, Moe, Jack, Curly, Larry, Moe and friends), again. It seems that the pelicans gather here daily, to catch the fish remnants the fisherman throw away, at the cleaning area near the dock.

So here are a few pictures for your enjoyment.

Red, White and Blue

This is a two part blog. Part 1 comes from me, the VBPS and USPS. Part 2 was taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html

Part 1. Red, White AND Blue - The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) has a web page that has a blue background, white text letters and with red here and there. Check out the sight at www.verobeachps.org/

Part 2. - Red, White & Blue (taken from http://www.usflag.org/colors.html) What do the colors of the Flag mean? Sentimental writers and orators sometimes ascribe meanings to the colors in the flag. The practice is erroneous, as are statements on this subject attributed to George Washington and other founders of the country. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated: "The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."
