FEBRUARY 20,2010 FISHING

FEBRUARY 20,2010 FISHING FIELD TRIP SPONSORED BY THE VERO BEACH POWER SQUADRON

FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

VBPS BOATS ARRIVE: 0800h

KIDS ARRIVE: 0830h

STARTING LOCATION: VBPS BUILDING & ADJACENT BASIN

LIVE SHRIMP DISTRIBUTION: WE WILL DISTRIBUTE 1 DOZEN SHRIMP PER KID AT TWO LOCATIONS WITHIN THE BASIN STARTING AT 0800h. ROB KANE & ASSISTANT WILL DISTRIBUTE SHRIMP FROM THE DOCK TO BOATS, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY I WILL DISTRIBUTE SHRIMP FROM MY BOAT (‘INCENTIVE’) TO OTHER BOATS IN THE BASIN. PLEASE HAVE YOUR BAIT BUCKET OR BAIT WELL READY.WE NEED TO COMPLETE THE SHRIMP DISTRIBUTION WHILE THE KIDS ARE INSIDE GETTING BRIEFED. WE DO NOT HAVE A PERFECT SYSTEM SO PLEASE BE FLEXIBLE, PATIENT, and ON TIME.

The kids will arrive at 0830h at the Power Squadron Building and have a brief boating orientation with Dan Thomas. Prior to the event Dan will e-mail each boat captain a summary of some basic boating educational material. We would like each captain to cover the e-mailed material with his kids while fishing. The kids will have a brief test on this material over lunch with a prize for the best score. After being fitted with PFD’S and a bathroom stop, each kid will board his/her designated boat along with the designated BGCIRC representative (a mix of BGCIRC Staff and Volunteers). The BGCIRC will pre-assign the BGCIRC representatives and specific kids for each of our 16 boats. That list will be e-mailed later this week. Please note that this is a catch and release only event for the sponsored children (ages 9-14).Frank & Pat Bilotta will not fish but will provide water taxi services with their deck boat. If any child is sick or needs to be transferred to a bathroom please hail Frank on Ch 16. I will monitor CH16 and Ch68 and handle any fishing tackle or other logistical problems (my boat name is ‘Incentive’). I will have copies of a chart with marked fishing locations, for those interested, as we distribute the shrimp to each participating boat. At 1200h please stop fishing and return to the Power Squadron Building for a hamburger/hot dog lunch with ice cream for dessert. The boating test will be given over lunch and then prizes awarded for the best test score, the biggest fish caught, the most fish caught, and the smallest fish caught. Additional prizes, donated by local fishing tackle stores, will be raffled. Do not forget to bring you camera and to take lots of pictures. Please bring a tape measure and keep a list of the fish caught by each kid along with its length.
