Boat Safety for the Young.

Beverly Jones has conducted this Vero Beach Power Squadron program for 3 years and she has done it very well.

This is Glendale School "After School Program." There were 60 children present. Children are divided by age groups: 6-8; 9-11; 12-14.

They were getting educated on the proper use of a PFD and also a few pointers on how to throw a ring to pull a person to safety. After they get introduced to all this the fun part comes into play.

The VBPS also has as part of this program a Poster Contest. The kids get to do what they want and draw and color something about what they learned. These pieces of art are then entered into the contest and winners are choosen.

I understand that a few get a finacial reward.

About the service

Captain WJT, of Vero Beach, passed recently at the age of 94. He was an active member of the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) where they held a Memorial to him, today, at 11:00, at the squadron building at 301 Acacia Road next to the Barber Bridge. The included photos captured some of the activity.

There was quite a turnout from what I saw. The parking lot was full of cars and there was standing room only leading out the door. The ceremony was conduced by the Squadrons Commander, Robert F. McCurdy (SN). The Chaplin, Frank (Tom) Jones III (S) did the eulogy and some of the attendees, his stepson, neighbors and friends, told a few short stories about Bill and his past experiences with them. After the ceremony everyone was invited to partake of a few hor'derves and drinks. Many stayed to mingle and chat.

About Captain Bill

Trabilcy, William J. (P) was born in 1913. Went into the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. Was around when the King and Queen came to America. He was very active in the VBPS. He taught classes at the squadron and was a member of the Coop Charting Group.

His boat, a Grady White, got launched onto ground. It went with the dock that blew away during a hurricane. It was salvaged.

I went on a Suwannee River houseboat adventure and did some Coop Charting with him about 12 years ago up and down the Indian River. Had a few meals with him along the way at Kelley’s, Mr. Manatees, Squid Lips, Captain Hirams, and of course all the Friday Night Socials. They said he liked clams or was it oysters at Mr. Manatees on Tuesday nights.

There is more but I want his out today so I plan to add to it during the week. Please come back.

USPS University

The Vero Beach Power Squadron(VBPS), affliated with the United States power Squadron(USPS), is promoting boaters education.

The VBPS holds classes here in Vero Beach for the local boaters, year round. The classes are taught at the squadron building on the Indian River next to the Barber Bridge. The instructors are members of the VBPS and have lots of experience to add to the information provided in the books. For more on that see www.verobeachps.org/

The USPS, is getting very creative with how they get boaters smart and have come up with the USPS University at the following web page(http://www.usps.org/national/natsec/university/home.htm). They have "Online Study'' for those who preffer to get smart at home, at your own pace.

America's Boating Course is a joint project between the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons. In addition, the course has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and is accepted by most states to meet boating license or safety certification requirements.

Seminar Series-Boating

USPS University is here with new programs targeted to a range of boaters and types of boating. The hallmark of this concept is the Seminar Series. These short seminars are targeted to specific topics and needs with a two-hour format, and valuable take-away guides. Each seminar provides credits toward the soon to be released Boat Operator Certification program, and credit toward elective courses. The first seven of these seminars are available now. Using VHF & VHF/DSC Marine Radio Using GPS How to Use a Chart Onboard Weather Forecasting Boat Handling under Power Sail Trim and Rig Tuning Paddle Smart Several more seminars are nearing completion and will be available soon: Knots for Mariners, Onboard Emergencies, Using Digital Charts, and Heavy Weather Sailing. You need to check the USPS website for seminars near you. The VBPS is looking into supporting theses activitys here in Indian River. For more information www.verobeachps.org/
